I have had personal experience with a grub infestation, and can now sing the praises of a good milky spore application.  As you said, it took a little while to take effect, but the results were already visible by the next growing season and had completely taken care of the problem by the second year.  One milky spore application lasts for I believe ten years, and it has no ill effects on humans or pets.  Additionally, we were able to educate the neighbors about this, so our abutting lawns were treated simultaneously.
